What asymmetric and directional tread patterns actually do, how they differ, and how to tell which one is fitted to your car.
Tread patterns aren't just decoration — they're engineered for a specific job. Two of the most common designs, asymmetric and directional, work in different ways. Here's what actually sets them apart.
An asymmetric tyre has two different tread patterns across its width — one half designed for dry grip and cornering, the other for dispersing water in wet conditions. The tyre is usually marked "Outside" and "Inside" so it's fitted the correct way round.
A directional tyre has a tread pattern designed to rotate in one direction only, usually shaped like an arrow or a V. This channels water away from the contact patch efficiently, which is why directional patterns are common on tyres aimed at wet-weather performance.
Both types are marked on the sidewall. An asymmetric tyre will show "Outside"/"Inside"; a directional tyre will usually show a rotation arrow. If you're not sure, check your tyre's sidewall markings or ask us when we're on-site.
Fitting either type backwards, or on the wrong side of the car, reduces the grip and water-dispersal benefits they're designed for. It's a detail worth getting right, which is why correct fitting — not just the tyre itself — is part of the job.
Neither is automatically the better choice — it depends on the vehicle, the tyre range, and what the manufacturer has designed for that specific tyre.
