Nails, glass and general debris on busier roads and car parks are a common cause of a slow leak or a sudden flat. A pressure warning light, a car pulling slightly to one side, or something visibly stuck in the tread are all signs worth acting on rather than waiting out.
Stop-start traffic and frequent roundabouts can accelerate uneven wear, often linked to alignment, pressure or suspension issues. Uneven wear reduces grip and shortens a tyre's working life, so it's worth having the cause identified rather than just replacing the tyre and expecting a different result.
By law, tyres need at least 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the tyre, all the way round — this is a legal minimum, not a target, and grip in wet conditions declines before tread reaches that point. The 20p coin test (insert a 20p coin into the main grooves; if the outer band is visible, it's worth getting checked) is a quick way to get a rough sense of where you stand, though a proper measurement needs a tread depth gauge.
Kerb strikes around retail parks and residential streets, along with potholes on some of the older West Lothian roads, can cause bulges, cracks or cuts in a tyre's sidewall. Sidewall damage isn't repairable — if you notice any of these signs, the tyre needs replacing rather than patching.
Cold mornings cause tyre pressure to drop, and it's easy to over-correct using a petrol station pump that isn't accurately calibrated. Incorrect pressure affects fuel efficiency, wear and the risk of a blowout, so a regular check against your vehicle's recommended figure is worth doing.
