Preparing Your Tyres For Winter Driving In Livingston

Cold, wet weather and Livingston's roundabouts and distributor roads are a demanding combination for tyres. A few checks before winter sets in go a long way toward avoiding a problem once the weather turns.

Check pressure as the temperature drops

Tyre pressure falls as the temperature does, so it's worth checking monthly through the colder months rather than assuming it's still correct from earlier in the year. Check tread depth properly

By law, tyres need at least 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters, all the way round — that's a legal minimum, not a target, and wet-weather grip declines before a tyre reaches it. The 20p coin test (insert a 20p coin into the main grooves; if the outer band is visible, get it checked) gives a rough indication, though a tread depth gauge is the accurate way to measure it.

Look for damage before it worsens

Hitting a kerb or a pothole in Livingston's residential areas or retail park car parks can cause a bulge or a cut in the sidewall that isn't always obvious at a glance. A quick visual check before winter, and after any kerb strike, is worth doing — sidewall damage isn't repairable and needs a replacement.
